Kyrgyz opposition says it may talk with president

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan — The head of the provisional authorities in Kyrgyzstan says for the first time that they could hold talks with the deposed president.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev claims he’s still the legitimate ruler but would be willing to resign in exchange for security guarantees for him and close relatives.

Bakiyev fled the capital on April 7 after a protest rally exploded into gunfire and demonstrators seized government buildings. At least 83 people died.

After meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake on Wednesday, opposition leader Roza Otunbayeva said “we will see” about talks with Bakiyev.

Blake’s visit to meet with the interim authorities underlined Washington’s strong concern about stability in Kyrgyzstan, where the United States has an air base.
