Carfax to offer recall info for GM customers

DETROIT — General Motors said Wednesday that it will partner with Carfax, which sells vehicle history information, to help customers and owners check for recalls of GM models.

GM is giving Carfax the vehicle identification numbers of millions of vehicles made under the Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands and under brands GM no longer owns — such as Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Pontiac.

Potential buyers and current owners will be able to use a vehicle’s unique identification number to check for unrepaired safety, noncompliance and emission recalls.

GM said the service was meant to provide more information to consumers.

Automakers already send letters to owners in the event of a recall.
