88 same-sex couples marry in Mexico City

Mexico City, April 6 (IANS/EFE) Eighty-eight same-sex couples have tied the knot here in the Mexican capital a month after a law in this regard was passed by the government.
Of the total number, 50 were male couples and 38 were female. Most of those getting married were between 31-40 years of age, though there were also some under 20, the government said Monday.
The law, which is in effect in Mexico City only, has been opposed by the right-wing National Action Party (PAN) and several state governments led by the party have presented constitutional challenges to the ordinance. But the Supreme Court said those plaintiffs lacked standing.
The capital civil registry, meanwhile, said it has 37 same-sex weddings still pending.
