13-year-old Calif. boy to attempt Everest climb

LOS ANGELES — A 13-year-old California boy is leaving for Nepal to try to climb Mount Everest as part of a quest to reach the summits of the highest peaks on all seven continents.

If Jordan Romero succeeds, he’ll become the youngest person to conquer the world’s highest mountain.

The teenager from Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains was scheduled to depart Monday night with his father and his father’s girlfriend, who helped train the teenager for top-level mountaineering.

Jordan set his goal at age 9 and has already climbed five of the seven peaks.

His father, Paul Romero, says he wants to make his son’s dream come true.

Romero is taking two months of homework so he can keep up at school.
