Wind-whipped fire shuts down Interstate 80 in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — A portion of Interstate 80 in Utah has been closed because of a wind-whipped fire near the southern shores of the Great Salt Lake.

Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Nile Easton says the fire shut down both directions of traffic near Saltair Tuesday afternoon.

He says traffic will be rerouted to nearby roads.

Fierce winds are blowing elsewhere in Utah ahead of an advancing storm. The National Weather Service says wind gusts reached 91 mph on Ogden Peak Tuesday afternoon. Winds toppled a truck in Sardine Canyon, forcing state officials to close that route to high-profile vehicles.
