Major haul of English wine seized at Lakanpur border

LAKAHPUR - A major consignment of 10,776 wine bottles concealed in 402 boxes, meant for smuggling into Kashmir, was prevented at the Lakhanpur toll post here on Tuesday.

The consignment of English wine was noticed in a truck, hidden among banana cartons at the Lakhanpur toll post, by alert toll tax personnel. The truck, carrying boxes of bananas, was on its way from Delhi to Srinagar.

According to B. A. Saraf, Deputy Commissioner of Excise and Taxation department at Lakhanpur, 10,776 wine bottles were hidden in 402 boxes.

“The truck loaded with boxes of bananas was going from Delhi to Kashmir. Under these banana boxes, we caught hold of 402 boxes of liquor. We found 840 bottles of 750 ml, 6000 bottles of 375 ml and 3936 bottles of 180 ml. The total number of bottles seized was 10,776,” said B. A. Saraf.

The seized wine is said to be worth 13,00,000 rupees (28,812 USD).

The truck driver Jaswant Singh has been arrested and the consignment seized under the Excise Act.(ANI)
