New South Carolina coastal boardwalk set to open

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Officials say a new mile-long boardwalk in the heart of South Carolina’s Grand Strand should be finished soon.

The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce says the ribbon cutting for the new $6 million boardwalk in the center of Myrtle Beach is scheduled for May 15 as part of a beach music festival.

Crews have been building the boardwalk since September. City spokesman Mark Kruea (KROO’-uh) says about three-quarters of the boardwalk should be finished.

Kruea says officials didn’t want to delay the opening into the summer because only two blocks would remain unfinished.

The boardwalk will include green spaces to sit. In the summer, it will host street performers and face painters.
