Clinton asks donors to make Haiti self-sufficient
NEW YORK — Former President Bill Clinton is asking the aid groups serving Haiti’s devastated communities to help make the county self-sufficient.
Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, spoke to representatives of the aid groups Thursday in Manhattan, ahead of a critical U.N. donors conference next week.
He told the audience that they need to help rebuild Haiti’s government and make sure their aid work is helping build strong, self-sufficient communities that aren’t dependent on international assistance.
Clinton asked the groups to give money to Haiti’s government to help it pay staff and train new employees. He asked the groups to focus efforts outside Haiti’s capital and help decentralize the country. And he asked the groups to hire local workers and make their expenditures transparent.
