Calif. police trying to ID woman found burned
MONTEREY, Calif. — California police are trying to learn the identity of a woman found engulfed in flames on a Monterey sidewalk, a ghastly discovery made by neighbors and passers-by.
Monterey police Lt. Leslie Sonne says the woman was found Monday night and that witnesses doused the flames with water before authorities arrived. Police say the woman died Wednesday in the hospital.
The woman had shoulder-length dark hair, wore a red or maroon sweater around her waist and white-and-grey Sketcher brand shoes. Also, police say they found a light-blue knit hat nearby.
Sonne says some kind of fuel was used in the burning, but has not identified the type.
