US military deaths in Iraq war at 4,386
As of Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at least 4,386 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
The figure includes nine military civilians killed in action. At least 3,480 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.
The AP count is four fewer than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EST.
Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,739 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.
The latest identifications reported by the military:
— Spc. Robert M. Rieckhoff, 26, of Kenosha, Wis.; died March 18 in Baghdad of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenade fire; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.
— Staff Sgt. Richard J. Jordan, 29, of Tyler, Texas; died March 16 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries suffered in a vehicle roll-over; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.
— Spc. Steven J. Bishop, 29, of Christiansburg, Va.; died March 13 in Tikrit, Iraq, while supporting combat operations; assigned to the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, 352nd Civil Affairs Command, U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C.
