Cook steps down as editor of The Baltimore Sun

BALTIMORE — J. Montgomery “Monty” Cook is stepping down as editor of The Baltimore Sun after about 15 months on the job and will go to work at the University of North Carolina.

Sun publisher Timothy E. Ryan announced Cook’s departure Tuesday in a memo to the newspaper’s staff.

Cook plans to join the journalism department at UNC’s Chapel Hill campus, his alma mater, where he will lead an experimental digital news and audience research initiative.

Mary Corey, who oversees the newspaper’s print content, will be interim editor while The Sun searches for Cook’s replacement.

Cook oversaw the merging of the newspaper’s print and online operations to make the Sun’s content “platform-neutral.” The Sun also boosted its presence on social networking sites.
