UN backs ‘Afghanization’ efforts

UNITED NATIONS — The Security Council has unanimously extended the U.N. mission in Afghanistan for a year with a mandate to continue leading international civilian activities while supporting Afghans’ efforts to take charge of their future.

The resolution adopted by the council calls on the U.N. to promote “more coherent” international support for the Afghan government’s priorities to promote development, improve governance, tackle the drug trade, and rebuild the war-ravaged country.

The U.N.’s most powerful body also called for the U.N. to strengthen coordination with the international military forces in the country.

The Security Council reiterated its concern at the increase in violent and terrorist activities by the Taliban, al-Qaida, illegally armed groups, criminals and those involved in the narcotics trade.
