UAW votes on agreement to shut down Calif. plant
FREMONT, Calif. — The United Auto Workers says employees at California’s sole remaining auto plant will likely ratify an agreement to shut down the facility.
Workers at the Nummi (NOO’-mee) plant in Fremont are voting on the deal Wednesday. The facility, which employs 4,600 people, is slated to close April 1.
Union officials won’t disclose the exact terms of the agreement but say they include a minimum payout of $21,175 per worker.
Nummi stands for New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. It began 25 years ago as a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Co.
GM pulled out last year and is liquidating its stake.
Toyota announced in August it would halt production. The Japanese automaker has been blasted by state officials and union leaders for not keeping the plant open.
