UN rights chief condemns ‘honor killings’ of women
GENEVA — The U.N.’s top human rights official is condemning domestic violence and the killing of women in the name of honor.
Navi Pillay says one in three women across the world are beaten, raped or otherwise abused sometime in their lives.
Pillay says about 5,000 women each year are victims of so-called ‘honor killings,’ in which relatives kill women for relationships they believe bring shame to the family.
She blamed, in part, some countries’ legal systems for protecting perpetrators from punishment. She refrained from naming specific countries in her statement Thursday, made before International Women’s Day, which is March 8.
