NY Rep. Massa expected to announce retirement

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Rep. Eric Massa, a freshman Democrat from western New York, is expected to announce that he will not seek re-election.

The 50-year-old Massa scheduled a conference call with reporters Wednesday afternoon. The Daily News of New York quoted a “Democratic source” saying he wouldn’t seek re-election this fall.

He was elected in 2008, defeating Republican Rep. Randy Kuhl in a district long dominated by Republicans.

Massa was stricken with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1996. He underwent aggressive treatment and stayed on as an aide to retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, a presidential candidate in 2004.
