US says Marjah operation going well

WASHINGTON — Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell says NATO-led operations in the Afghan farming town of Marjah are “trending in a very positive direction.”

Morrell told reporters Thursday at the Pentagon that NATO troops have almost purged the area of insurgent fighters and are turning their attending to protecting the area. Morrell said the mission is moving from “the clearing phase to the holding phase.”

Morrell said the situation is still very dangerous and that crude explosives remain the biggest threat.

The mass assault in southern Helmand province, with 15,000 NATO and Afghan troops, is the largest military operation in Afghanistan since the ouster of the Taliban regime in 2001.
