Train kills 3 girls crossing bridge in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A train struck and killed three girls as they walked across a bridge in central Florida.

Melbourne police have not released the identities or ages of the three who were killed Saturday evening, but said all were juveniles.

Police Lt. Marc Claycomb says the three girls and a boy were walking across the trestle when the train approached them from behind. The boy made it across the bridge first, saw the train and tried to warn the girls, who were unable to get out of the way in time.

Authorities in Melbourne, which is about 50 miles east of Orlando, are investigating.

The track is owned by the Florida East Coast Railway, which operates about 350 miles of track along the state’s east coast.
