US Airways flight lands safely at Sky Harbor
PHOENIX — A US Airways plane headed to New Jersey experienced an engine problem shortly after takeoff Friday afternoon and safely returned to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport.
A spokesman for the carrier says a left engine compressor stalled soon after Flight 685 took off about 1:20 p.m. MST.
Airport spokeswoman Claire Stern says the Airbus A320 landed without incident with no reported injuries.
US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher says the 150 passengers were being put on another plane to fly to Newark.
Passenger Andrew Heisler said people heard “what sounded like a car backfiring” shortly after takeoff.
“We were already off the ground,” Heisler said. “Everybody was mumbling and looking at each other like, ‘What just happened?’”
