Coroner confirms 2 Mexican children died in rains
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified two bodies found near the border with Mexico as siblings who drowned when their vehicle was swept away in Tijuana by last month’s torrential rains.
The coroner’s office said Tuesday that DNA and other evidence shows 6-year-old Tiffany Virginia Cruz and 1-year-old Hector Jorge Cruz died in the Jan. 20 storm.
The children were in the back seat of a vehicle in Mexico that got swept away by rains into the north-flowing Tijuana River. Their 10-year-old sister died in Tijuana.
A volunteer group called Desert Angels found the boy Jan. 27 on U.S. soil and his older sister four days later.
