Pakistan gunships attack car in North Waziristan
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan — Pakistani officials say army helicopters have opened fire on a car traveling in the al-Qaida stronghold of North Waziristan close to the Afghan border, killing one man and wounding two others.
The intelligence officials said the attack Friday on the outskirts of Miran Shah town was carried out because the car was violating a curfew.
They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media.
They say the vehicle left the compound of the Tablighi Jemaat Islamic missionary group and was then attacked.
North Waziristan is home to scores of al-Qaida and Taliban fighters.
The Pakistani army has so far resisted moving into the region in force, unlike in neighboring South Waziristan.
