DHL to donate Ohio airport for redevelopment

WILMINGTON, Ohio — Public officials say an agreement by package delivery company DHL Express to donate its abandoned airport in southwest Ohio to the region will boost efforts to attract new companies and jobs.

State and local officials and DHL executives announced the preliminary agreement Tuesday in Wilmington, saying it should be final by Feb. 28.

DHL declined to give the property donation’s value. The company will pay for some environmental cleanup on the 1,500 acres and pay up to $625,000 to cover transaction costs of the Clinton County Port Authority, which is accepting the donation for the region.

About 8,000 jobs have been lost at the airport since DHL announced in 2008 that it was pulling out and moving operations to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
