Spain plans time capsule under Cervantes statue
MADRID — The Spanish capital is planning to place a time capsule under a statue of author Miguel de Cervantes.
The new capsule would replace a nearly 200-year-old capsule found last month by workers digging under the monument to the author of “Don Quixote de la Mancha.”
The metropolitan Madrid region’s culture minister, Ignacio Gonzalez, says the government will conduct an online poll asking for suggestions on what to place in the new capsule. He said Thursday that the objects should be associated with Cervantes or Madrid.
The Cervantes statue outside Parliament was inaugurated in 1835.
The objects found last month include several copies of “Don Quixote” published in 1819, a newspaper from 1834 wrapped around a calendar, and travel guides.
