15 Virginia projects get biomass energy grants

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Fifteen biomass and waste-to-energy projects in Virginia are sharing $10 million in grants as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act State Energy Program.

Gov. Tim Kaine announced the grants Thursday in Martinsville. The governor’s office says the money will support $110 million in private investments statewide.

Officials say using waste materials from logging, manufacturing, agricultural or municipal operations can provide a significant economic benefit. It also helps reduce the use of traditional fuels and cut back on waste disposal costs and other environmental impacts. The project also can provide additional revenue crops for farmers and loggers.
