Cleanup of explosives spill delays NC port opening

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — A North Carolina port will reopen later than planned because crews are still cleaning up spilled explosives.

No one was hurt when a forklift operator accidentally punctured containers of PETN, the same explosive used in a Christmas Day airline bombing attempt.

Officials said in a statement Wednesday that crews are maintaining the “utmost safety” in cleaning the spill. The port had been expected to reopen at 8 a.m. but officials did not set a new time after that target passed.

The cleanup work is being directed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
