Skiers trapped in German gondolas

BERLIN — Police say some 60 skiers are trapped in 30 gondolas at a southern German resort because a technical problem halted the lift system.

Bad Toelz police spokesman Harald Bauer said Tuesday that a dozen skiers have been lowered from gondolas and that five helicopters are on hand to bring those in higher gondolas to safety.

He says there was a technical failure with the lift system just before 10 a.m. that triggered an automatic shutdown of the whole system.

He says none of the trapped skiers are believed to be in any danger.

The operation is expected to last several hours.
