Memorials set for veteran editor Deborah Howell

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A pair of memorial services have been scheduled for former Washington Post ombudsman and Minnesota newspaper editor Deborah Howell.

One will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 15 at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the same day Howell would have turned 69. The second is set for 11 a.m. on Jan. 23, at Central Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.

Howell died Jan. 1 after being struck by a car in New Zealand.

She was raised in Texas and worked for newspapers there before moving to Minnesota. She was a reporter and editor at the Minneapolis Star before leading the St. Paul Pioneer Press to two Pulitzers.

Howell served as Washington bureau chief and editor of Newhouse News Service, which also won a Pulitzer while she was there. She was ombudsman at the Post from 2005 to 2008.
