DFW Airport gets $2.3 million federal grant

DALLAS — Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is getting a $2.3 million federal grant to fix one of its runways.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that construction is expected to start in early January and will include repairing concrete slabs and joints on the 13,400-foot runway to make it less likely that debris can develop on the surface.

DFW spokesman David Magana said the work would be done on the main runway for arriving flights on the west side of the airport. He said the runway is in use but that DFW continually looks for funding to help pay for maintenance work.

DFW has pairs of parallel runways on each side of the terminal and three other major runways. It ranked as the world’s seventh-busiest airport by passenger traffic in 2008, according to the Airports Council International, a trade group.

Money for the maintenance work came from the stimulus package that Congress approved in February.

The FAA said it received $1.1 billion from the stimulus program to spend at airports nationwide, and has committed funding to 360 projects.
