American Airlines jet overshoots runway in Jamaica

MIAMI — An American Airlines flight that took off from Miami Tuesday night overshot a runway in Kingston, Jamaica, but came to a safe stop and all passengers were off the plane, a spokesman said. Officials did not have immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

Flight 331 took off from Miami International Airport Tuesday at 8:52 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Norman Manley International Airport at 10:27 p.m.

American Airlines spokesman Charley Wilson said it was almost a full flight that normally carries 140 passengers plus the crew.

Kingston Policeman Oneil Hinds at police headquarters said officers at the scene reported the plane ran off the end of the runway.

He said people were taken to hospital but did not know how many or anything about injuries. He says the plane was damaged but did not break apart.

Shaken passenger Naomi Palmer told the Jamaica Observer though that “the plane crashed and broke almost in front of me.”

Palmer said she was feeling some pain and was being supported by a friend on the outside of the arrival area.
