Only three in ten Americans consider themselves ‘Democrats’: Poll

WASHINGTON - Only three in ten Americans consider themselves Democrats, according to the latest poll.

The Politico quoted a Gallup poll as saying that the latest figure ties the lowest level of Democratic affiliation since the polling firm began compiling annual data in 1988.

It further shows that it is a substantial drop from just two years ago, when President Barack Obama was in the midst of his bid for the White House and 36 percent of Americans said they were Democrats.

The poll also claims that 38 percent of Americans identify themselves as independents, tying the high from 1994, when Bill Clinton was at the halfway point of his first term and Republicans regained a majority in the House of Representatives.

Twenty-nine percent of Americans identified themselves as Republicans in 2010, a figure that has risen only slightly.

“Even as Republicans were enjoying great electoral success, the percentage of Americans identifying with the GOP, the core base of the party, barely increased,” Gallup pollster Jeff Jones wrote.

“Instead, the major movement in American politics since 2008 seems to be away from the Democratic Party and toward independent political status, rather than alignment with the GOP. Still, the Republican Party appeared to capitalize on many independents’ frustration with the majority Democratic Party, in much the same way the Democrats capitalized on independents’ frustration with the Republicans between 2006 and 2008,” it added.
