Conn. town warns residents about harmful hawk

STONINGTON, Conn. — Police in a Connecticut town say an aggressive red-tailed hawk has attacked at least five people, including a woman who was cut on the head and needed medical care.

Police used e-mail and a reverse 911 system Wednesday to send warnings to residents of Stonington, a shoreline town bordering Rhode Island.

The large hawk has snatched a hat off a boy’s head, snagged headphones from a man on a lawnmower and even attacked a car. On Tuesday, it gashed a woman’s head so deeply she had to be checked at a hospital.

Recess and gym classes at a nearby school were held indoors.

The state Department of Environmental Protection is working with the town to find the bird and determine what to do about its aggressive behavior.
