KEARNEY, Neb. — Police and snipers are surrounding a bank in southern Nebraska because of a hostage situation inside.

A spokeswoman for Nebraska’s Wells Fargo Bank branches, Angie Kaipust, confirmed that there is a hostage situation at the Kearney branch. She says the bank is cooperating with authorities but declined to provide more details.

The Kearney Hub newspaper reports that between 30 and 40 employees and customers of the bank left the building through a side door late Wednesday morning.

No shots have been reported, but other details remain unclear.

Police and other authorities have refused to immediately release information about the situation.

Kearney is about 185 miles west of Omaha.
