Neb. could allow driver’s licenses to be scanned

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska is on track to become the last state to allow retail clerks to electronically scan information from driver’s licenses.

The Legislature gave second-round approval to a bill (LB261) from Sen. Kent Rogert of Tekamah. He and supporters say the bill will make it easier to determine ages of people buying alcohol, tobacco and lottery tickets.

Opponents worry that personal information could be stolen and used inappropriately, such as for identity theft and product marketing.

Currently, only the courts and police can swipe driver’s licenses. The only information that is revealed by swiping driver’s licenses is visible on the front of the cards, such as names, addresses and license numbers.
