CHENNAI - Over 2,000 Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) members, including party’s Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, were arrested here on Wednesday after they tried to take out a rally protesting the alleged abduction of over 100 Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka.

According to the police, others detained were Lok Sabha MP TKS Elangovan and DMK senior functionaries.

The DMK activists tried to take out a rally to the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission here in connection with the yesterday’s incident.

Earlier, Kanimozhi slammed the Sri Lankan Government for the incident, and demanded immediate release of the fishermen.

More than 100 Indian fishermen have been detained in Sri Lanka on Tuesday for allegedly straying into the Lankan waters.

The Indian fishermen were intercepted by the Sri Lankan fishermen off the coast of Point pedro and later they were handed over to the Sri Lankan police.

This latest round of controversy will hit the festering fishermen issue between India and Sri Lanka and could trigger a diplomatic row.

The Indian consular general office in Jaffna has been granted access to the arrested fishermen and is in touch with them for their early release.

This is the fourth such incident of fishermen either being killed or detained in Lanka this year. (ANI)
