Assange’s mother urges Rudd yet again to protect Wikileaks founder’s legal, human rights

CANBERRA - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s mother has urged Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd yet again to provide full support to her son in safeguarding his legal and human rights.
Assange is facing possible extradition from Britain to Sweden on sexual assault charges.
Rudd had earlier said that Australia was doing everything possible to protect whistle blowing website’s founder, but Christine Assange said that his message was unclear, news.com.au reports.
She said that his media people had possibly made a “typo”, because really the statement should read ‘Kevin Rudd says Australia is doing all it can TO Assange’. The question is - for who?”
“Because it’s not for Julian, it’s not for human rights, it’s not for freedom of speech, it’s not for legal rights, it’s not on behalf of the Australian people, who are up in arms about it. Who is it on behalf of?” Christine added.
On Friday, she had written a letter to Rudd demanding the government to take necessary steps to stop her son from being extradited to Sweden or prosecuted in the US. She had hand-delivered an eight-page handwritten letter to Rudd’s Brisbane electorate office, and also read it out to journalists.
She had also demanded Rudd resignation if he failed to protect her son. She asked him to respond today, the report said.
Earlier, she had also slammed Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Attorney-General Robert McClelland for to be not involved in the whole episode because Australians strongly supported WikiLeaks. (ANI)
