LAHORE - Double murder-accused US official Raymond Davis spent a relaxed first day in the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, where he has been remanded in judicial custody until February 25, and reportedly enjoying the protocol befitting a president.
Sources said Davis was at liberty to interact with the outside world on the internet and the phone amidst maximum security.
They said the jail gate remained shut all day long, and was only opened for the IG and the DIG Prison or the US vehicles visiting Davis.
“US Consulate officials in four vehicles, including a black Range Rover and a white Corona, visited him on Saturday at intervals,” The Nation quoted sources, as saying.
They revealed that the first US Consulate vehicle arrived in the morning and served Davis a sumptuous breakfast.
“A few other officials in the white Corona arrived around lunch time, at 1:15pm. A third vehicle arrived at teatime while some senior officials of the US Consulate in Black Range Rover came to deliver him dinner,” they added.
According to the sources, “Every vehicle of the US Consulate made it to the security wall around Davis’ room without any search.”
The room where President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N leader Makhdoom Hashmi were earlier imprisoned is now being furnished for Davis, they revealed, adding: “Security pickets on the rooftop are getting the final touches.”
Meanwhile jail visitors and inmates have been facing multiple problems since the US official has been kept there.
“My parents would give 200 rupees to a police constable to pass me homemade food, sugar, shaving cream and rice. Now the rate has surged to 500 rupees per prisoner,” an inmate rued. (ANI)
