SRINAGAR - Life across Srinagar was affected Friday by a separatist shutdown called to observe the death anniversary of separatist leader Muhammad Maqbool Bhat, who was founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).
Shops remained closed and public transport was off the road in uptown and most old city areas of Srinagar in response to the shutdown called by the JKLF. Bhat was hanged this day in 1984 in Tihar Jail in Delhi.
The JKLF has since been demanding the mortal remains of its founder who was buried inside the jail complex after his execution there.
The JKLF shutdown call has been supported by both factions of the Hurriyat group headed by hardliner Syed Ali Geelani and moderate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
Security has been tightened in the city to ensure that no untoward incident occurs during the day.
Contingents of police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed to maintain law and order in the city, police here said.
