Final phase of Census 2011 begins

NEW DELHI - The second phase of Census 2011 was inaugurated by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.
After releasing a Special Commemorative Postal Stamp on the occasion, President Patil asked all persons to take part whole-heartedly in the Census operation.
Starting from today, the second phase will continue till February 28. It will take into account vital information about demography, besides economic and social changes.
The government has decided to prepare a National Population egister (NPR) along with the Census 2011
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram who was present on the occasion said the census will reflect the socio- economic condition of the people.
The 15th census will enumerate the country’s 1.2 billion population. All 640 districts , 5767 tehsils , 7,742 towns and more than six lakh villages in the country will be covered.
The Indian Census has been the most credible source of information on demography, economic activity, literacy and education, fertility and mortality, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and many other socio-cultural data since 1872. (ANI)
