STORY: Top Indian leaders including Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and foreign dignitaries on Sunday (January 30) attended an all-religion prayer meeting in New Delhi to mark the 63rd death anniversary of father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
Children from across the country sang hymns at the solemn ceremony held at the Birla House, the place where iconic Indian freedom struggle leader was assassinated.
Renowned singers paid their tribute by presenting the Gandhian songs at the ceremony.
Gandhi is regarded as a symbol of peace and nonviolence all across the globe. Many world leaders including Nelson Mandela and U.S president Barack Obama have acknowledged Gandhi as their source of inspiration.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi, pioneered the philosophy of nonviolent resistance to the British occupation of India. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi by a Hindu radical.
