India’s regional party Pattali Makkal Katchi will join another regional party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led ruling alliance for the upcoming assembly elections in southern Tamil Nadu state, says Muthuvel Karunanidhi, chief of the province and president of DMK.

STORY: India’s regional party Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) would join another regional party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led ruling alliance for the upcoming assembly elections in southern Tamil Nadu state, said Muthuvel Karunanidhi, chief of the province and president of DMK, on Sunday (January 30).
PMK headed by S Ramadoss, which fought the 2009 parliamentary elections along with the provincial main opposition regional party AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), will now be part of the ruling coalition.
“(Question) In the DMK-led alliance which other political parties are going to be your partner apart from Congress and DMK?
(Answer) Viduthalai Chiruthai, PMK, Muslim League are the parties, that is,” said Karunanidhi, on a visit to national capital New Delhi.
Karunanidhi, who is in New Delhi on a three-day visit, will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and federal ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi on Monday (January 31) to discuss the seat-sharing agreement between the two parties for the state polls due before the term of the present assembly expires in May.

The Congress is believed to be demanding around 80 to 90 seats in the 234-member House, DMK is likely to part with no more than 60-65 seats. In the last state polls in 2006, Congress party contested 48 seats.
