KARCHANA - Farmers protested in Karchana of Uttar Pradesh over their demand of rightful compensation against usage of their land for building of a power project.

Hundreds of local farmers blocked the road and shouted slogans against the administration for turning a deaf ear to their pleas.

Mahadev Dwivedi, a leader of the agitating farmers said that the farmers would continue to demonstrate until their demands are fulfilled.

Dwivedi listed the issues of farmers and demanded that all those who would be affected because of the farmer’s displacement should also be compensated.

“We are demanding rightful compensation for people who have lost their land. One person from every family should get a job under the resettlement policy of 2007. The village labourers like ironsmith, washer man etc, who are dependent on the farmers should also get jobs and compensation of Rs. 62,500 and people are being harassed by officials when they go to receive their cheques hence they should come here and distribute the cheques,” said Dwivedi.

A private company, Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd. is building a 1980 Megawatt capacity power project in Karchana district.

Farmers had earlier alleged that the company was trying to forcibly take their land without adequate compensation. (ANI)
