SURAT - A non-governmental organisation (NGO) launched an awareness campaign in Gujarat’s Surat city to save birds that get killed by the kite threads during the Makar Sankranti, a festival of harvest.

The campaign was launched ahead of the festival, as it is celebrated by flying kites and the sharp threads kill the birds very often.

“We are bringing an awareness campaign on how the birds get injured and die with kite threads which are sharp as lasers and we are training volunteers how to rescue birds and how to give them first aid and reach it to nearest hospital and rescue centres,” said Darshan Desai, the representative of the social group.

“We are encouraging school kids and college students to not to fly kites and run awareness campaign and clean…trees so that less and less bird get injured,” he added.

The social group is training the volunteers how to save birds when they get injured.

“We have come here, as the festival is arriving and birds get injured, there is an NGO here in Surat. So, it is giving us training as to how to treat injured birds,” said Tejas, one of the volunteers.

Makar Sankranti or the festival of harvest is celebrated on January 14 every year.

People celebrate this day very traditionally by flying kites, as it marks the end of the harvest season. By Dharmesh (ANI)
