SRINAGAR - The Department of Education in Jammu and Kashmir has initiated series of five-day workshops for primary school teachers to impart methods of childhood care and education.

One such workshop named ‘Early Childhood Care and Education’ is being currently held under the auspices of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Srinagar.

The main aim of the workshop has been to train teachers of government schools about the play methods, language skills and modes of cultivating intellectual development among children in the age group of 2 to 7 as these years lay the foundation for subsequent learning.

“We have called many experts from Education Department, Health Department, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) department and they gave training to teachers of pre nursery schools that how do physical, learning and socio-emotional development of children takes place,” said Nissar Ahmad, co-ordinator of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

“Because you know now-a-days children are under the pressure of books and they cannot learn due to this pressure, which leads to deformity among kids. We taught the teachers that learning takes place through different activities, through play way methods, we can do physical and learning development of children,” he added.

Teachers belonging to the government schools have participated in the workshop from far-flung districts.

Teachers said they have learnt ways of dealing with tiny tots and how to nurture their physical and mental development.

“We were taught for the first time, how make the child physically, mentally and emotionally strong and how to increase a child’s knowledge as well as provide moral and value-based education. Today, with the help of this workshop we realised that the children are not coming to school, they are coming to play,” said Sahiba Jan, a government school teacher.

“They should be made to realise that they come to school for playing and can be provided education as well. We are enriched by the workshop and are getting to learn a lot on how efficiently we can deal with a child,” she added.
