J-K locals stick to traditional methods, tools to fight cold

SRINAGAR - Despite the availability of modern machineries, the locals in Kashmir valley are using traditional methods and tools to fight cold during the winter season.

The Jammu and Kashmir has kept alive its traditions and cultures, which protects locals from harsh weather.

The locals here said snowfall and the cold weather has become an integral part of their lives.

“To be able to survive in this cold wave, I think we have mastered this art by birth. It is part of our social life and has become an integral part of our life. We eagerly wait for snowfall. Therefore, the snowfall in a way brushes up and polishes our traditional culture and values,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a local.

During winters, locals in Kashmir use ‘Dhaan’, a traditional earthen oven, which keeps the house warm.

Everybody here wears ‘Pheran’, a traditional woolen gown, which acts like shield against cold wave during winters.

‘Kangri’, a traditional firepot, which contains burning coals, is often used to keep hands and feet warm.

“The use of ‘Kangri’ (a traditional firepot) is a must during winters. We usually use Kangri and use ‘pheran’ (a loose-fitted woolen gown) to fight cold and other woolen shirts. But mostly we use ‘pheran’,” said Irshad Ahmad Tantray, a local.

Moreover, the kashmiri food is rich in spices and includes non-vegetarian meals, which keeps people warm and active throughout the day. (ANI)
