NORMAN (GaeaTimes.com)- The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) group has discovered three bone fragments that might prove that renowned aviator Amelia Earhart died after failing in her 1937 quest. The fragments of the bones are recovered from South Pacific island on the group’s expedition to Nikumaroro Island. University of Oklahoma scientists said that they would extract DNA from the bones which may be linked to Amelia Earhart.
The researchers also added that they found other items in Nikumaroro Island near those bone fragments which might also be from a turtle. The University officials said that they are still unsure when they will be able to produce the result of the DNA test. On the other hand, Ric Gillespie, the director of International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery said that even if University of Oklahoma comes up with the result that the bones are linked to Amelia Earhart, even then the bones will be tested for a second time as it is a rigorous investigation.
Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937 and regarding the bones found in Nikumaroro Island, Ric Gillespie said that nobody can still guarantee that the bones belong to highly-acclaimed aviator who has been missing for years. However, he added that if the assumptions turn out to be true then it would be good for the researchers as it would end a mystery of seven decades. Ric Gillespie said that he believes that Amelia Earhart lived in Nikumaroro Island and died as a castaway. The bone fragments are sent to Molecular Science Laboratories of University of Oklahoma for DNA extract and verification.
