LUCKNOW - Muslim devotees walked barefoot on flaming embers to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, in Lucknow.

Muslim celebrated ‘Ashura’, the tenth day of the Islamic month of Moharram, which sees the climax of the ritual mourning.

“Our prophet was killed in the battle of Karbala, Imam Hussain, after his death, his relatives’ settlements were set on fire and when the settlements were set on fire, the women were walking on the fire to save themselves and at the time of prayers they offered prayers at that place. So, in their remembrance, we offer prayers on fire,” said Aqeel Asif, a devotee.

Mohammad Irfan Ansari, another Muslim devotee, said that he would have also sacrificed his relatives in the battle.

“I have peace and tranquility in my heart for Imam Hussain who was killed in the battle of Karbala along with 72 of his relatives, friends and supporters. If I had any younger brother then I would have also sacrificed him in this battle,” said

The martyrdom day of Imam Hussain is marked by prayers and processions led by Tazia, or replicas of Imam Hussein’s tomb at Karbala in Iraq and self-flagellation by mourners. By Kamna Mathur (ANI)
