JAMMU - Lt. Gen. J.P. Nehra Friday took over as the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the 16 Corps, also known as the White Knight Corps, at its headquarters in Nagrota, near Jammu.
As head of the 16 Corps, Nehra would be responsible for the army’s vigil and action against the infiltration attempts from across the Line of Control (LoC) from Akhnoor to the edges of Hajipeer in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas in the Jammu region.
More than 250 km of the 744 km LoC lies in the Jammu region, and its two districts of Rajouri and Poonch are the favourite infiltration routes of Pakistani militants.
The 16 Corps troops are also engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the hinterland, particularly in the Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Jammu region.
According to a 16 Corps spokesman, Nehra brings with him considerable experience of fighting insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and Nagaland.
He succeeds Lt. Gen. Romeshwar Roy, who has taken over as the director general of the Shillong-based paramilitary Assam Rifles.
