Elephants cause havoc in Jalpaiguri’s tea estate

JALPAIGURI - A herd of 40 elephant caused havoc in a tea estate in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.

On Tuesday, the wild herd damaged large tracts of tea estate and caused panic among the villagers.

Villagers said the elephants are coming into human habitats daily since last four-five days.

“The elephants have come and we are facing a lot of problem. There is no electricity also here so we are facing a lot of inconvenience. The elephants are coming continuously from the last four-five days during night-time,” said Khush Minj, a villager.

The forest officials were unable to drive the elephants away. The main problem for the forest officials was to stop the herd of elephants from entering the other nearby tea estates.

“In the morning we received information that a herd of elephants has entered the Red Bank tea estate from the nearby Rethi Forest Range, so we sent our staff. There are six-seven elephant calves in this group,” said Kalyan Das, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Jalpaiguri district.

So, if somebody will disturb the elephant calf then the elephants may harm the people around, which may lead to some kind of accident,” he added.
