CHENNAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The city of Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu are reeling under the onslaught of heavy rainfall for the past few days. The heavy downpour has left many dead while thousands have been rendered homeless. The torrential rains which have been triggered due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal has resulted in floods in extensive parts of the capital city of Chennai owing to which a state of high alert has been declared in many parts of Tamil Nadu.

According to reports, till Monday evening more than 160 people have been killed in rain-related incidents across the state while thousands from have evacuated from the low-lying areas to avert any untoward incidents. In the wake of the havoc that has been wrecked by the heavy downpour, the Tamil Nadu government has called an emergency cabinet meeting to evaluate the flood-like situation that has been prevailing in Chennai as well as the other regions of the state. The regions which have been affected the most due to the heavy rainfall include, Chennai, Trichy as well as Nagapattinam, officials have said. Given the fact that the weather department has predicted more rainfall in the upcoming days, it seems unlikely that the bleak scenario in Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu would be improving in the near future.

Meanwhile, owing to the heavy rainfall in Chennai, power supply in the city has been disrupted with trees being uprooted and all the low-lying areas being water-logged. The traffic situation in the city has also been rather dismal with the city-dwellers facing heavy traffic snarls due to the torrential downpour.
