President Patil releases commemorative postage stamp on pioneer industrialist Singhania

New Delhi, Dc 1(ANI): President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Wednesday released a commemorative stamp and the first day cover (FDC) brought out by the Indian Posts in honour of Lala Kamlapat Singhania at a function hosted in New Delhi.

Singhania was one of the pioneer industrialists in the country, and the stamp was released on the occasion of his 126th birth anniversary.

He was known for his far-sighted vision, leadership and his achievements in the industrial arena and founded the J.K. Organization, one of the major corporate groups in the country.

On the occasion, Minister of State for Information Technology Gurudas Kamat highlighted that the Postal Department brings out commemorative postage stamps in honour of great men and women.

He said that in tune with this tradition, the postage stamp of great leader, entrepreneur and visionary Singhania has been brought out.

“The Department of Posts issues commemorative postage stamps in honour of great leaders of national and international stature and also great men and women who lived their lives of quite endeavour and achieving extraordinary goals. Today, we are going to issue the commemorative postage stamp on Lala Kamlapat Singhania,” Kamat said.

The stamp is in the denomination of Rs.5, and features a photograph of Singhania with the clock tower of Cawnpore Woollen Mills founded by him in the background.

Singhania was born on November 7, 1884. His business ventures included the manufacture of cotton yarn, cloth, ice, oil, hosiery, jute, sugar and iron and steel.

He was a spiritual and patriotic person, and was deeply influenced by the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Madan Mohan Malviya, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Motilal Nehru.

He had a deep interest in social affairs and affairs connected with the development of the society. He also promoted education and established Marwari College in Kanpur.

Earlier, on November 15, President Patil had released another special postage stamp to commemorate the centenary of Singhania’s brother Lala Lakshmipat Singhania. (ANI)
