Bihar Police recovers landmine in Gaya

GAYA - Bihar Police recovered a five-kilogram landmine in Gaya district over the weekend.

Officials said the landmine with a 600-metre-wire was kept for targeting police vehicles.

Police suspect the role of Maoists in planting the landmine explosive, as the Maoists had been threatening voters to boycott the recently concluded Assembly elections.

“The wire was out. By seeing that, we assumed that it might be a landmine so we called the bomb squad officials. We have also informed our seniors who sent the bomb squad officials at the spot. They are digging out the landmine,” said Ashok Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Special Task Force.

The sixth and last phase of State Assembly elections in Bihar concluded peacefully on Saturday with 50.98 percent voters exercising their franchise.

Special Task Force (STF) commandos and senior police officials maintained air surveillance while regular patrolling kept a close watch for any militant activity.

Counting of the estimated 55 million votes for the 243-seat assembly will take place on Wednesday. By Surya Pratap (ANI)
